10 Takeaways from our Networking Redefined Masterclass

Hi!

Our Q3 Leadership Lab Masterclass with Monique Kelley last week gave us a chance to rethink networking—not as something transactional, but as authentic, long-game relationship building.

If this session (or the tips in our recap below) resonated with you, tomorrow’s virtual Biopharma Comms Forum is the perfect place to take those ideas into real conversations with the T2B community.

Here are our top 10 takeaways from the session:

  1. Redefine networking beyond transactions. Think about “earning your keep” by consistently contributing value before you need to ask for support.
  2. Recognize energy-draining patterns. Notice when networking starts to feel one-sided and depleting instead of energizing.
  3. Apply your comms skills internally. Use the same strategic messaging you bring to executive positioning to articulate your own value.
  4. Embrace the “Three-Step Value Framework.” Identify your unique value, define your target audience, and choose the right channels.
  5. Listen first for value opportunities. Focus on understanding pain points rather than asking “How can I help?”
  6. Leverage your natural connector abilities. Make introductions and share opportunities as a genuine way to add value.
  7. Navigate virtual relationship limits. Keep in mind that 65% of people find trust-building harder online.
  8. Prioritize quality over quantity. At big events, aim for meaningful conversations with a few people rather than collecting contacts.
  9. Practice the long game. Build relationships without immediate expectations — opportunities often surface months or years later.
  10. Invest consistently. Stay in touch during good times, not just when you’re in transition or need something.

If you couldn’t make it, or want to revisit the conversation, the replay is available here (Pro & Student members can log into their T2B accounts to view):

A big thanks to Monique for guiding us through this discussion and sharing her networking strategies. Looking forward to putting these ideas into practice tomorrow at the forum!

Hope to see you there,
Lynnea

Hi! If you were with us in Boston in June, you know how energizing it was to be in a room full of comms peers wrestling with the same tough questions. To broaden the conversation to all of you, no matter where you’re based, we’re hosting our first-ever virtual Biopharma Comms Forum this Thursday. We designed the agenda to cover the challenges we are all navigating right now, whether as part of a large comms function at a pharma company, the only communicator at a small biotech, as an agency...

Hi! At our Philly meetup earlier this week, someone asked what a typical day looks like for Michelle and me. My answer? We spend A LOT of time with our ears to the ground, talking to the members of this community. And then we spend even more time building the infrastructure that makes our programming possible. We brainstorm and refine topics, identify the most relevant voices, and find creative ways to bring those back to the community. Our first-ever Ticket to Biotech Virtual Forum: The...

Hi! As communicators, feedback is at the heart of everything we do. That includes providing counsel to leadership when the stakes are high, mentoring junior colleagues, guiding partners within our organizations, and being open to input from fellow team members. How to give and receive that feedback in ways that strengthen trust and build influence is the topic of our September Comm Convo, Feedback, Feedforward, and Everything in Between. We’re especially looking forward to the conversation...
