Tomorrow! From Newsroom to Newsletter: Why Healthcare’s Top Journalists Are Going Independent

Hi!

You don't need me to tell you that there's an ongoing, major, major shift in healthcare media. One of the most prominent changes we're seeing right now is more journalists leaving traditional newsrooms to launch independent newsletters, podcasts, and subscriber-supported publications of their own.

For us communicators, that raises important questions: How are reporters finding stories? What does credibility look like outside traditional media brands? How are these new publications going to be sustainable? And how should media relations strategies adapt?

This week the T2B Media Minds Roundtable has two resources for you. First, a reminder that our Q2 Media Minds Roundtable event is tomorrow:

From Newsroom to Newsletter: Why Healthcare's Top Journalists Are Going Independent

📅 Thursday, June 25th

⏰ 11 a.m.-12 p.m. ET / 8-9 a.m. PT / 4-5 p.m. BST

Register here. Quarterly roundtable programming is free and exclusive to T2B Pro and Student members.

This discussion brings together three veteran journalists who have successfully built independent media ventures after careers at organizations including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Bloomberg News, Vox, USA Today, and AOL.

Our speakers:

  • Liz Kelly Nelson, Founder, Project C; former newsroom leader at Vox, USA Today, Gannett, and AOL
  • Tara Parker-Pope, Founder, One Day Better; former founding editor of Well at The New York Times and Well+Being at The Washington Post
  • Sharon Goldman, Founder, Ground Level AI; former reporter at Fortune and Venture Beat

T2B Media Minds Roundtable members Ellen Murphy (Head of Corporate Media & Executive Visibility, Syneos Health Communications) and Stephanie Stratman (Corporate Communications, Encoded Therapeutics) will be moderating.

New reporter profile available

And second, if you're interested in understanding this trend on a more individual level, we've just published a new Biopharma Beats Bulletin featuring Andrew Han, the former GenomeWeb reporter who recently launched the Ion Genomics newsletter and podcast. Huge thanks to Media Minds Roundtable chair Betsy Yates for this Q&A!

A few highlights:

  • After nearly a decade covering next-generation sequencing and genomics at GenomeWeb, Andrew launched his own publication focused on genomics, diagnostics, precision medicine, and the business of DNA sequencing.
  • He's particularly interested in where AI and genomics intersect, including virtual cells, foundation models in biology, and sequencing-based cancer testing.
  • His biggest piece of advice for communicators: bring genuine expertise and teach him something new.

He says: "I'm constantly wondering what the genome can actually tell us. ... I'm interested in stories that try to answer that question one way or another."

T2B Pro and Student members can read the full Biopharma Beats Bulletin here.

See you online tomorrow!

Hi! Last month, our Reaching and Valuing Every Generation Comm Convo explored how generational dynamics influence the way we communicate, collaborate, and build trust across the industry. Our panel of corporate affairs leaders -- all at different career stages -- examined how communicators can better engage stakeholders across generations, challenge assumptions about age and experience, and build stronger, more inclusive teams.
