AI Adoption Is Accelerating, But Corporate Readiness Is Not

Hi!

Last week, we highlighted just how integrated AI has become in everyday biopharma work.

But the second finding in our inaugural AI in Biopharma Communications survey raises a bigger question: What happens when individual communicators adopt AI faster than their organizations?

Today we explore the contrast between the recent surge in individual AI use and the lag in mature governance, standardized workflows, and formal support at most organizations.

Individual adoption is outpacing organizational readiness

While individuals are quickly building AI into their daily workflows, only 21% of respondents describe their team or function as mature and formally governed. The majority (53%) say their organization is still in a "growing" stage, where AI is being used in some workflows but isn't yet standardized or consistently supported.

Communicators are filling the gaps

The survey findings also suggested that many employees prefer to use different platforms than those provided by their organizations.

While, perhaps unsurprisingly, Microsoft Copilot is the platform most often provided or approved by employers, many respondents are also using ChatGPT, Claude, and other tools. In fact, 58% said they use AI platforms beyond those supplied by their organization.

These responses suggest that communicators are on the hunt for the tools that best help them solve problems, move faster, and produce stronger work.

What's next?

As organizations continue to build governance and standards, communicators are thinking beyond basic AI use.

One of the top skills respondents want to develop next is managing agentic AI workflows — moving beyond single prompts toward AI systems that can help execute more complex tasks under human direction.

We'll explore that topic in more depth during our upcoming AI Roundtable session on July 28th, where we'll discuss what responsible delegation to AI looks like in our professiont. (Sign up here!)

Hi! Ever since I can remember, the de facto comms announcement strategy has centered on company statements, press releases, media outreach, executive quotes, and corporate social channels. Those still matter. But increasingly, credibility also depends on who is speaking, where they are speaking, and whether the message feels like it is coming from a real person with expertise, judgment, and something meaningful to say. That could mean a CEO on LinkedIn, a scientist explaining the work in...

Because much of our work involves helping people navigate competing priorities, resistance to change, unclear objectives, and difficult conversations. Our job goes way, way beyond helping people communicate; we help people think through -- often serving as a guide through -- complex situations. Bringing that coaching mindset into our everyday communications work is the topic of our Q3 masterclass. The Coaching Mindset for...
